Porter Sargent Handbooks Unveils New Resource in Discovering Private Education Options for Students with Special Needs

February 4, 2011

WESTFORD, Ma. – For the first time, families and parents of students with special needs now have a new resource to help them find the best private educational options for their children. The Guide to Private Special Education, published by Porter Sargent Handbooks, outlines educational programs for families and consultants looking to place elementary and secondary students with special needs in the most optimal learning environments.

Although private institutions aren't funded under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), in June of 2009 the Supreme Court ruled that parents of special-education students may seek government reimbursement for private school tuition, and more and more independent schools are working with special needs students to give them the finest education possible.

A follow-up to the highly regarded Directory for Exceptional Children, the Guide sharpens its focus to private schools to provide vital data on more than 450 day and residential programs across the country. Special-needs conditions addressed include ADD, ADHD, dyslexia and other learning disabilities, blindness and visual impairment, deafness and hearing impairment, deaf-blindness, emotional disturbances, intellectual disabilities (mental retardation), multiple disabilities, orthopedic/neurological impairments, autism and pervasive developmental disorder, speech/language impairments, substance abuse and traumatic brain injury.
