Wintergreen Orchard House is a major database compiler and provider, specializing in the college, graduate, and scholarship fields. The college database was originally developed by the Graduate School of Education of Harvard University in the 1950's and was regularly updated through the years. Orchard House, founded in 1978, took over the database from Harvard and managed the distribution and maintenance. In 1994, Orchard House merged with Wintergreen Software, Inc., a major educational software producer that specialized in products for the professional counselor market, and they became the largest college and scholarship database provider in the country.
In 2004, the company was acquired by the education division of Alloy, Inc. (NASDAQ: ALOY), one of the nation's largest youth marketing companies. Alloy and its multiple divisions target Generation Y, a key demographic segment comprising more than 60 million youths in the United States between the ages of 10 and 24.The education division focuses on the 15- to 24-year-old market. Database development and editorial operations for Wintergreen Orchard House are based in Westford, Massachusetts.
